Although the Gregorian calendar was coined from Pope Gregory XIII, he was not the one who invented it.

The primary goal was to change the date of Easter. The reason is that it falls behind spring as of the previously used January calendar. This had caused a massive influence that most of the people come of use.

It is a solar calendar like the Julian calendar introduced by Julius Caesar with 365 days and 12 months.

The difference is that the Julian calendar months have a consistent number of days, which is 28. Gregorian calendars have irregular months ranging from 28 to 31.

When you hear the word January, what comes into your mind?

One could think about the fireworks and loud noises of joy. This signifies the arrival of a new beginning as the clock strikes twelve.

January is rooted in the word Janus. It is the name of the roman God symbolized by two heads facing forward and backward. Being the God of doors, gates, and transitions, he was perfect to represent the calendar's first month. He plays as the middle boundary between the beginning and the end.

The first of January then became the feast date of Janus as well.
